What does the verb ending “-us” mean in Esperanto?

-us
Esperanto grammar
the verb ending for “would” — Esperanto’s whole conditional mood in three letters

Playing a “would you rather” game for a video challenge, this creator asks herself the same question over and over: “Ĉu vi preferus...?” — “Would you prefer...?” Esperanto marks the entire conditional mood with one ending, -us, added straight onto any verb root — no auxiliary “would” required, and no irregular forms to memorize.

-us completes a set of six verb endings that cover every tense and mood in the language: -as (present), -is (past), -os (future), -u (command), -i (infinitive), and -us itself. Its most common job is the classic conditional sentence — “se vi helpus min, mi lernus pli rapide,” “if you helped me, I’d learn faster” — both halves taking the same ending.
