What does “Januarsyndrom” mean in German?
Clara talks about a feeling everyone knows: you begin the new year full of energy, then after a few weeks the motivation is gone. She gives it a name — das Januarsyndrom — and compares it to New Year gym plans: in January the gyms are packed, in February half empty. It is a light, slightly ironic word for a very human habit, and it fits just as well when you are learning German.
In the clip: “Das ist das berühmte Januarsyndrom, oder? So wie bei den Neujahrsvorsätzen fürs Fitnessstudio.” — “That’s the famous January syndrome, right? Just like New Year’s plans for the gym.” Januar means January; Syndrom means syndrome. German glues them into one word — das Januarsyndrom — to name the pattern of starting strong in January and giving up by February. It is not a medical term; it is a playful, knowing label for something most people do. Plain examples: - “Jedes Jahr das gleiche Januarsyndrom.” — “Every year the same January thing.” - “Im Fitnessstudio sieht man das Januarsyndrom gut.” — “You can see the January effect clearly at the gym.” Usage note: informal and a bit ironic. People say it about themselves or a group, not as a serious diagnosis. The “j” sounds like an English “y”, so it begins “Ya-nu-ar”.
